PeaceNext

It has become evident from watching and reading U.S. media that the debate raging over the building of a New York City Islamic center near the WTC site is a hugely contentious issue right now. We’d like to bring the issue to PeaceNext, and ask you for your thoughts and comments on this issue. Should the Islamic center be built? Do Americans have a right to be offended if such a building is built so close to the WTC site? If construction is rejected, would such a rejection be an affront to religious liberty? Please provide your viewpoints, and we simply ask that you keep the conversation civil and respectful of all opinions.

Sufi,

Am I to understand that you believe the U. S. State department is bringing in people known to be hostile to western values and life so that they can work against us. That they are conspiring to dupe us into believing the whole business is harmless. That this conspiracy is so sophisticated that only InfoWars.com can tell us about it?

It does seem that this controversy is just ginned up hype. There is no intention to build a mosque at 'ground zero'. The proposed site is two blocks from the perimeter of the World Trade Center Complex. In usual New York City Blocks it is a distance of about six standard city blocks, from the perimeter of the trade center complex.

It is hard to glean the facts from the hype. I think that is because this issue is more hype than anything else. As near as I can tell my statement as to relative proximity and location is accurate. It seems this controversy has little to do with the proposed Islamic Center. It seems the Islamic Center is being used as a ruse to gin up controversy for political agendas. Politics as usual in an election year.
Sufi,

I think I am beginning to understand. If something is said loud enough or repeated enough times; it is true. It all sounds very familiar. This is what drove me from religion. It is why I am a secularist. I am only confident in God's example of Gods-self. Do you think my focus is too narrow? Too mainstream? I think if you want to see the whole picture you have to first be honest enough to look at it, and challenge your own preconceptions. Sufi, I do not think you are doing that.

I'm out of things to say *grin*
I guess we agree to disagree :)

Well said, Mystic Tourist, it is also part of what drove me from the mainstream religions.

The discussion concerning the proposed mosque is all over religious discussion boards. Here Spectrummagazine's site begins with the brief appearance of Samir Selmanovic, leader of Manhattan's Faith House, in a CBS news report. As the discussion progresses, Selmanovic's own marginal position within his own Christian denomination (Seventh-day Adventist) arises, and the denomination's relation to other faiths is contested by its own members. However, the strong call for religious liberty for all, including the right to build and worship at will, is upheld.

I just read a comment on an atheist website that has the best statement on this controversy I have heard yet.

Plus, has anyone looked at the Ground Zero site lately? It's trashed. It's gross. If this is supposed to be a memorial, a place for people to come to remember, mounds of dirt and scaffolding is not going to do the job. It truly worries me that our politicians and citizens are too busy being worried about a religious group trying to practice hope and love and peace (which IS what Islam teaches), than to memorialize a site they consider oh so sacred.

Thanks Ron. I really enjoyed that article. I reposted it on my personal Facebook page and as a NewsShare here on Peace Next.

Most questions about funding Park51 are from people who are opposed to the project. Here is a posting which approaches it from the perspective of a real estate investment. Apparently it is woefully underfunded at present. The vitriolic opposition it has created - justified or not - will probably make legitimate investors wary. Even architects and construction companies might be hesitant to bid on it.

One of the very best messages to all Muslims living in the West can be heard today (September 14) at Saltanat.org
