Empathy is fundamental to our well-being. All people are inherently empathic, however, many people learn to shut down their empathic responses to others because it makes us feel more vulnerable on the one hand and because it makes us less psychologically well disposed to exploit them on the other hand.
The response to deny empathic awareness is therefore a survival mechanism of our cognitive and emotional behavior.
Many people respond with feelings of guilt when they deny their empathic awareness, they are aware that in their true hearts they should be more sensitive and responsive to the needs of others around them. This guilt motivates some people to greater social performance in support of their communities, while in others it motivates a more severe hardening of their hearts.
We must learn to always keep our hearts open at all times, for without our empathy we are less human and we dehumnaize others in our own eyes more readily.
