Everybody talks about slavery as if, as if it no longer exists but unfortunately it does. Each religion affirms the common dignity of every person and the idea of slavery serves to undermine this belief.

According to the UN, over 50 million girls in India are missing: having been aborted, killed, or neglected to death simply because they are female. Consumerism & Human Traffiking
I am trying to find ways to get people more engaged in the conversation about how we as "consumers" contribute to human slavery around the world in ways that we are not aware of. A huge example is the chocolate & coffee industries. Especially forced child labor seems to be a big issue. I know that there are alternatives, such as buying fair trade. We tried to have a fair trade Halloween & encourage all the people at our church to purchase fair trade/slave free chocolate, but many didn't because of the high price & difficulty finding it. Does anyone have ideas about ways that we can make a difference with our power as consumers? Are there any interfaith initiatives about this kind of thing that you all are aware of? I am really interested in the large and small ways that we can play a role in stopping the traffik around the world and supporting local economies in sustainable & just ways. Thank you! Slavery has many names (human trafficking, traditional or chattel slavery, etc.)
