In his famous "Canticle of Brother Sun", St Francis of Assisi (Patron of Ecology and Animals) reveals a cosmic sense of kinship; he addressed Sun as Brother and Moon as Sister and invited one (and ALL) into a world that preserved a family relationship between all beings.

Well, it goes without saying that "family" of every form and fashion has suffered ,and continues to suffer in our contemporary twenty-first century world. Consumer mentality, increased mobility, hectic lifestyles; they have all put immeasurable pressure on EVERY family unit!

It's almost easy to understand that the world might have difficulty understanding any sense of a unified, "divine", or "spiritual family; and yet, we are all linked to humanity,as well as to the moon, stars, forests and streams. The Divine is The Sacred Spirit of all people, earth, sea, sky, and all life. This awareness of a compassionate, nourishing Source of All Reality can (and should) move our human family deeply; may I practice looking beyond externals, and treat those I meet...people and creatures, with care and tenderness. May I keep in mind that each is a creature of The Divine, and thus, a family member.

According to the UN, over 50 million girls in India are missing: having been aborted, killed, or neglected to death simply because they are female. In some regions, no baby girl has survived in years. Help us make a difference.

that's true Andras ,,, he did say prisoners of "splendour" as well ... pretty good ! and IMO that accounts for the human capacity to wonder or sit awestruck ( "stupified" is another way of putting it ... and that might be so for better and for worse).

Hi Glenys
I think, in context, that he was just indulging in a bit of irony --- "prisoners of splendor," indeed! As for the dragonflies, I'm trying to contemplate what it would be like to perceive the world through a dozen eyes, never mind 30,000: it truly boggles the mind...

I think of the animals and birds as our ancestors: the birds have certainly been around for much longer than humans, and so have quite a lot of the animals ... though some are younger depending on how you figure it. And yes - whole different world views there - dragon flies have 30,000 optical units or something ... whole other realities. Awesome to contemplate just some of those experiences. not sure I like the "prisoners" term in the quote - a bit effected by dualistic culture I think.

That is a wonderful quote, Andras! Thank you for sharing it. I wonder what the world peace prayer would be like if we included *those* other nations. May there be peace among the vulpine nation, may peace prevail on earth. May there be peace among the ursine nation, may peace prevail on earth. etc

I'd like to share with you this beautiful quote from the American (from Massachusetts) naturalist Henry Beston (1888-1968):

"The animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth."

Swami, This is an interesting article. How do you connect it with Earth spirituality?
