The Silicon Valley Interreligious Council (SiVIC) steering committee was confirmed to continue the work of setting up the infrastructure, finance, membership, and incorporation. Subcommittees were formed and are meeting to each work on a portion of this group-creation work. We are currently looking at launching the organization with a big event on March 6, 2011 from 2:30-5pm at Santa Clara University's Benson Hall (in the Student Union). The steering committee as a whole will be tackling the organizational aspects of SiVIC.

Silicon Valley Interreligious Council
[Formerly the Interreligous Leaders Dialogue Group]
The next meeting in our work to create a new multifaith organization in the South Bay will be hosted by Temple Emanu-El in San Jose.
After Summer vacations, the beginning of Ramadan, and the Jewish High Holy Days in early September, we have been invited to meet on September 28th, 11:45 am to 1:30 pm, at Temple Emanu-El. The planning team intends to present a specific proposal for the mission, objectives, membership, and governance of the Council, and we hope to have Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese with us, and perhaps some other local leaders in Silicon Valley.
We will be meeting in the Sukkah (or "booth"), a temporary structure that is used during the celebration of the season of Sukkoth (September 23-29), a time for remembering the wanderings in the wilderness after the people of Israel left slavery in Egypt and before they entered the land of Canaan. Watch for more details about lunch arrangements.
Remember that reports of our gatherings, reports from the planning group, and other notes and background documents can be found on the SouthBay Interfaith website, www.southbayinterfaith.org, under "Links > Discussion Documents."
Date: Tuesday, September 28, 2010
Time: 11:45 am- 1:30 pm
Location: Temple Emanu-El, 1010 University Avenue, San Jose [Map]

San Jose, CA

The Gyuto Vajrayana Center is pleased to announce that it will host a Post-Teaching Interfaith Gathering from 4:00-6:00pm on Tuesday, October 12.

Everyone who attends His Holiness’ teaching is invited to register and join us in Ballroom A of the San Jose Convention Center.
Registration is limited to those who attend His Holiness' teaching and available on a first-come-first-served basis.

This interfaith gathering provides an opportunity for people from a variety of faith traditions to share insights and ideas on His Holiness’ teaching with one another. Eminent teachers and scholars will offer initial reflections.

A $15.00 registration fee covers the cost of snacks and beverages.
The Gyuto Center will underwrite all other costs for this event.

Ordained Clergy from any faith tradition may receive a complimentary ticket to His Holiness’ teaching by completing the Registration Form for Interfaith Clergy on the Gyuto Center Website (see link below), but must register for the interfaith gathering.

Note two important events coming up next week. On Wednesday, September 8th, at 11:00 am, there will be a press conference at the First Baptist Church of Palo Alto, 305 N. California Street, Palo Alto, CA . We will be sharing statements of concern and announcing the community gathering to be held on Friday. We invite you or your spokesperson to be present at the press conference.

On Friday, September 10, 5:00 - 6:30 pm, religious communities from around the Valley will gather at the Jim McEntee Plaza at the Santa Clara County office building, 70 W. Hedding, San Jose, CA to demonstrate our support of religious freedom and to celebrate the relationships we have built with one another. You and your congregation are invited to join us in a show of solidarity as people of faith.

Details of the events will be posted on the Interfaith Space events calendar as they are confirmed: http://www.interfaithspace.org/IS-events.htm

From Rev. Andy Kille: Many of us in the interfaith community have been distressed by the increasingly shrill and hostile rhetoric aimed at Muslims in many places around our country. We feel it is essential at this time for people of goodwill to stand up and defend the principles of religious freedom that have enabled us to work together as members of diverse religious communities in the service of the common good.
Local leaders have been working on an interfaith statement regarding the NYC Islamic Center Controversy. If you are interested in reviewing and signing, please contact Rev. Kille, who is a member of this group.
