Women of Spirit and Faith
invites you to gather with other women
for reflection, connection and prayer
on the
10th Anniversary of September 11.

September 11, 2001 was a powerful moment in our human history,
one that continues to reverberate and echo in our hearts and minds.
The 10th Anniversary is the perfect time to gather with others to reflect upon the events of that day,
to honor those who died, and to affirm a hopeful future for our human family.
Women of Spirit and Faith invites you to join a local gathering
or to host your own circle gathering during the anniversary weekend September 10-12, 2011.

Your gathering can be large or small … a community event or an intimate circle experience …
indoors or out in nature …. in conversation or in silence…. joyful or prayerful.
Follow your heart.
Invite a circle of women to join you.
Gather.
Invite Spirit into the center of your circle.
Speak from your heart.
Listen.
Breathe in and out together.
Join you energy with the many thousands who will gather around the world.

We offer these questions to focus your circle sharing:
What has changed in the world as a result of 9/11?
What is your vision for a world of peace and compassion post 9/11?
How have you changed since that day?
What was born in you on 9/11?
We offer Circle guidelines and resources on our website
We also encourage you to join a new national movement
September 11, 2011: Empowering people to look within and reach out on the ten-year anniversary of 9/11.
In honor of those lost on 9/11 and in its decade-long aftermath, congregations and communities will commemorate the past, listen to one another’s stories,
and create a shared moral vision of a world that is better than the one we have today.

On the Groundswell site, you can post your event or search for 9/11 events in your area at

Rev. Cheen,

Heaven's no!  In responding simply relative to the mentor/mentee question, I see that relationship as much more intimate and thus in parallel to the "guide on the side" metaphor from teaching.  There is absolutely a place for and necessity as well, for the "sage on the stage" in conveying wisdom (boy, would I be in trouble if there were not ....).  For me, personally, the "sage on the stage" approach lessens and sometimes can lose the connection which I feel I need in the mentor/mentee relationship.  That, however, does not mean that profound awakenings and rememberings don't occur in the more presentational style of the sage, simply that there are - for me - differences in the types connections, which can - for me - translate at times into differences in the quality of connection.

What occurs when women of spirit and faith gather?

What shifts and perspective changes occur for those who come together?

Hear some of the women who attended our recent tele-conversation.

Next call: June 28th, 5:30 PM PST.

Is it an either-or choice between the sage and the guide?

Comment by Sonia Dunbar on June 1, 2011 at 2:39pm

Rev. Cheen -

In any mentor/mentee relationship my greatest longing, from either perspective, is the establishment of a bond of trust and sharing of wonder.  As a mentor, I desire my mentee to feel that she/he is safe to explore the deep questions, the ones which often hover just beneath the surface.  I view my place as a coach, to help explore and perhaps assist in establishing a process for my mentee's exploration of the deep questions.  My goal is always to guide to the point where my mentee no longer "needs" me.  When I was teaching, my favourite professor used to tell us that the best teacher was "not the sage on the stage, but the guide on the side."  That's how I view the necessary approach of a mentor and it would be what I would desire as a mentee.
