Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake; I pray the Lord my soul to take. I sometimes pray that prayer before I go to sleep. My parents taught it to me as a child. It’s a nice prayer. I’ve been trying to teach it to my own daughters but it’s been more difficult than it should be.Perhaps thinking them incapable of producing plenty of noise on their own, different people have given them stuffed animals that talk – indeed, animals that “pray” this…See More

About Me:
My name is Ben Maton. I am a husband of one, father of 3, and a PhD candidate in “Scripture, Interpretation, and Practice” at the University of Virginia. Before coming to UVA, for 6 years I pastored two small Lutheran congregations (Missouri Synod) in New England. Prior to and in preparation for that ministry, I earned a BA in history from Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska and the MDiv and STM degrees from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. I am currently interested in the scriptural reading practices in different communities of Christians and how these practices give rise to distinct homiletical performances of those scriptures. My study of scripture as that which is for proclamation that gives rise to Christian community continues to be enriched by my appreciation of the deeply communal and performative nature of rabbinic/midrashic study of Torah. While at UVA I have been involved in the practice of “Scriptural Reasoning” with faculty and student members of the three Abrahamic traditions. Since I have no other readily marketable skills and have trouble getting the earth to yield more than thorns and thistles, I am hoping, D.v., that life after graduate school includes a paycheck for doing something churchy and staying actively involved in nurturing inter-Abrahamic friendships through non-reductive dialogue and study.
