Texting? Nexting?

Started Nov 23, 2009 0 Replies

'Texting' is a computer term... well, sort-of. Cell phones are computers right? And when you send a text message from your cell, you're 'texting.'I wonder if this all means that we're all 'nexting'…Continue

Religion / Faith
Roman Catholic
I have attended the Parliament of Religions:
Never
Local Religious Community / Interfaith Affiliation:
St. Gertrude Parish / Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions
Website:

I have come to PeaceNext looking for:
networking, interreligious advocacy, interreligious exploration, intrareligious reflection, friendship
I am inspired by:
- My wife, my daughter, and all my family and friends
- The wonderful people work, who give so much of their sweat and energy day-by-day and month-by-month.
- The Book of Ecclesiastes
- The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe
My favorite spiritual places:
In Michigan: The Porcupine Mountains
In New York City: The Met and Inwood Park
In Chicago: The Magic Hedge near the Montrose St. Beach
In Romania: The cities of Szec, Cluj, Ploiesti, Bucuresti, and Iasi
In Ireland: The Cliffs of Moher
In Flint: The Atlas Coney Island, and the Flint Cultural Center, and Chevrolet St. in Mott Park.
Interreligious causes I care about:
the Environment, Social Justice: Alleviating Poverty, Hunger, and advocating for Universal Health Care.
Changes I am working toward in my community:
The social services corridor at Lawrence and Sheridan is absolutely critical to many who would otherwise go without in Chicago; I want religious and non-religious organizations to support it as rigorously as they can.
About Me:
I am a writer (of weird and ghostly things) but I am also the Outreach Manager for the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions.
I am a Catholic Socialist from Flint, Michigan.
I have lived in Chicago and New York City, and am a founding member of the Gothic Funk Nation.
I am happily married and blessed with many friends and a rock-solid family.
I believe that sharks and monkeys and octopodes and fish are wonderful animals.
I believe that radioactive ultraviolet is the best color.
I do not believe that a good story requires a beginning, middle, and end.

The Catechism has some juicy and challenging passages (836-845) on the relationship of the Church to other denominations and faiths. The books of Ruth, Job and New Testament letters take a circumspect view. Let's learn about ourselves and each other!

My thoughts on the Lower Manhattan Islamic Center.

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 11:30am 2 Comments

Funny. I posted this entry on another social network I belong to -- the very different site "VampireFreaks.com." We're having an engaging conversation on the much abused Ground Zero Mosque Park 51. My thoughts below.

I not only support this project, I enthusiastically support it.

1. Ethical Reason #1: As to their right to build the center, there is no debate: it is explicit in the… Continue

What I Think I Heard in the Heat.

1. I'm hard of hearing.

2. I was late, almost tripping over my feet as I carried my three-month old daughter into St. Gertrude's Parish on Chicago's North Side, finding a pew just in time for the Gospel reading.

3. I was hot... it must have been ninety degrees in Chicago outside -- oppressive and overcast -- and that could have made it a clean hundred inside the church, which had a couple fans and lots of church bulletins flapping rapidly in front of sweating… Continue

Christianity and Social Justice

Posted on March 12, 2010 at 2:30am 2 Comments

I confess, I've copy-and-pasted this from my personal blog, but it doesn't seem off-topic, either for the interreligious movement or for the inevitable entanglements between our secular habits and spiritual aspirations:

So I wrote the following letter as a response to Glenn Beck's recent call for Christians to renounce any church, congregation, or parish that calls for "social justice" or "economic justice" because they are code words for "nazism" and "communism."

First,… Continue

First, our PeaceNext Beta Group has well surpassed 100 people from around the world representing a great many faith traditions and personal experiences. I am very excited when I log in, and there's already a wealth of great content here.

Second, I want to post a link to a video that I originally uploaded as a test several weeks ago. If you watch this you may be skeptical of the numbers and citations... don't doubt them. They are real. And while social networks are not really distinct… Continue
