Religious Belief and Community: a presence of hope in the midst of loneliness

Started Jul 29, 2010 0 Replies

I happened upon this news post this morning.  It deals with loneliness as a serious health issue.  Having said that, we know, from our experience of our own communities and from PWR, that religious…Continue

Fr Simon Falk commented on Rebecca Levi's blog post 'Building Hedges: What the Rabbis Taught Me About Managing ADHD'
Hi Rebecca. Thanks for this blog which I find interesting on a number of levels. 1) You have used medical, cultural and religious media - in an integrated way - to manage your experience of ADHD. 2) While you have approached this experience from the…

Taming the Terror Within and Without

Taming the Terror Within and WithoutSome of us like to hear those ‘master and disciple’ stories from time to time.  Here is one.A master and disciple were seated in the tea house taking their tea.  As the master poured some tea into their cups the disciple began talking about recent events.“Master, news from the village reports that some special forces have killed a known terrorist leader who was in hiding!”“Yes,” replied the master.“Well, it is wonderful,” continued the disciple.  “There are…See More

I have come to PeaceNext looking for:
interreligious exploration, intrareligious reflection
I am inspired by:
Attending the 2009 Parliament of World Religions and the peace, goodwill and sensible scholarship I have found there.
My favorite spiritual places:
Churches and places designated or marked out for prayer. Places of natural beauty. The presence of other people. Centres of learning. Even commuting. Travel and pilgrimage.
Interreligious causes I care about:
Peace among the religions. Shared scholarship and dispelling ignorance.
Changes I am working toward in my community:
Alas, am just beginning
About Me:
I'm a short, lefthanded Aussie from Celtic and Germanic origins. Have been a catholic priest for a number of years now (ordained 2000) and did study comparative religion in an arts degree years ago. Am currently doing some post-graduate theology in Melbourne and belong the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. I used to be a person of peace. Gradually the knocks of life changed that but the peace is coming back - PWR 2009 has added to that peace.

Taming the Terror Within and Without

Some of us like to hear those ‘master and disciple’ stories from time to time.  Here is one.

A master and disciple were seated in the tea house taking their tea.  As the master poured some tea into their cups the disciple began talking about recent events.

Blogosphere a wild west or revitalizing faith?

Posted on October 12, 2010 at 8:14pm 0 Comments

Some discussion is taking place in Catholic circles about blogs and revitalizing faith. It seems, however, that they are a mixed blessing where some of the "loud and proud" have bordered on harassing and nasty. See this link http://www.cathnews.com/article.aspx?aeid=23664 .

Surely, there is healthy cyber-sharing going on as well.

We've all witnessed some really good articles, blogs and other posts. Do we know… Continue

Accountability and spirituality for our religious expression

I know the link that I have posted might seem specifically Christian and very Catholic. But, think again. How many of us have experienced - or, had related to us by other persons - moments where religious leaders or agencies acted in ways to protect the culpability of some of its… Continue

Religious Literacy and Intellectual Curiosity: Asking some questions.

Posted on September 29, 2010 at 8:30pm 0 Comments

Recently, cyberspace has seen some lively discussions on the pew survey on religious knowledge and also on openness to intellectual curiosity in religions.

This has me asking some questions.

Looking at the "out there" or more objective details what do we know about the religions that we ourselves profess to belong to? That is, what does a reality check on our own religious knowledge look like? What do we know about other religions that differ from our own religion?

Looking at the… Continue

A short free verse I posted on the wall at the Parliament. It could do with some more polish.
PWR
Light
Shining in the darkness.
Faith
Illuminating through the distrustful ignorance.
Hope
Lifting up the downtrodden in despair.
Healing
Binding up the hearts of individuals and people’s broken hearts.
Healing
Salving the barren and toxified
Air, land and sea.
Peace only the divine can give
Between you and me.
