Crossroads

I was in a meeting with my supervisor last week, moving steadily through a list of agenda items.Reflect on five year celebration. Check. Discuss plans for upcoming program review. Check. Share dismay at strategic planning event conflicting with Good Friday. Check. Sort of.My intentions were clear. I wanted to make a simple statement about how we sometimes unknowingly compromise the strength of our shared community when we force individuals to choose between the community and their personal…See More

"Hi Jennifer, It is a curious business when we decide to turn amateur anthropoligists and investigate that which is foreign to our own cultural heritage.  We are always grateful when we see anyone engaged in such efforts. We imagined a very…"

Grigori Rho Gharveyn commented on Jennifer's blog post Scrapbooking Jesus
"Perhaps the role of a scrapbook is not to define what we perceive to anyone other than ourselves.  Then the texture of the sand, the paper wrapper of a sweet treat, a shred from an old bathing suit may evoke within us all the feelings of wonder…"

Scrapbooking Jesus

When my first child was born, over nine years ago, I had a friend who was a "consultant" for scrapbooking enthusiasts. Good friend that I am, I dutifully hosted a party at my home, bought more supplies than I could ever possibly use, and set about documenting my daughter's earliest days. The only problem? I never completed her scrapbook--not even close. And the scrapbook I started for her brother three years later? An even more incomplete version of his then young life. Amusingly, I left a…See More

Free to offer welcome

To my friends and family in the American Baptist Churches, USA,I have been a proud member of American Baptist churches for my entire life. I am the daughter and granddaughter (twice!) of American Baptist pastors, my sister-in-law is ordained by an ABC association, and my husband and I eagerly seek out ABC congregations when we move to a new location. In a time when many of our peers are swapping a hymnal and Bible for a cup of coffee and the New York Times,…See More

Integration, In-Formation, Incarnation

Despite the resistance to seminary I described in my previous post, I have moaned on many occasions, "I wish I could just go to school full-time." I am meandering my way through seminary, indulging in one class each fall, spring, and summer term. With a full-time profession that supports my family of four, it is a privilege to even crawl my way to a second graduate degree, but it is not uncommon for me to…See More

For the Reverend Martin Luther King…sing.

My college roommate and I were fairly obsessive U2 fans; we even chose one year to wallpaper our residence hall room with free "Rattle and Hum" posters we had collected in bulk at an on-campus viewing of the film. (I take enough pride in this obsession to confess here to once having a dream in which Bono pulled me up on stage a la Courtney Cox and Bruce Springsteen. Alas, my only U2 concert included stadium seats so far from the stage, I could barely discern Bono's quintessential swagger .) I…See More

On Being Krista Tippett

I am a relatively recent, but wholeheartedly enthusiastic fan of Krista Tippett, host of American Public Media's Being, formerly Speaking of Faith. Listening to her this week as the opening lecturer for Calvin College's January Series, I had one recurring thought. I want her job. Krista's paycheck and purpose coexist, the result of her insatiable curiosity about people and her passion for life's…See More

(en)gendering dialogue

A colleague of mine recently shared a hard-to-find video relating the work of linguist Deborah Tannen to children's communication styles in same-sex pairs and groups. (If anyone discovers the link, let me know--I'll happily include it here!) While I have mixed feelings about any work that runs the risk of being interpreted as biological…See More

Whispers of a call

Brad Bannon's post, responding to Honna Eichler, brought this two-year old post from my blog to mind. I still whisper of what my "formation" might mean--my own acknowledgment of the power in the voices above, within, and to the side (thanks, James Croft) of me. Thanks, new friends, for bringing these words back…See More
