A New Supreme Pontiff and What It Means for Interreligious Dialogue

Just before noon on Monday in Rome, Italy, Pope Benedict XVI addressed assembled Cardinals of the Catholic Church. After serving nearly eight years as the Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God, Benedict XVI, after careful prayer and contemplation, announced his impending…See More

Dealing with Mental Illness as a Person of Faith

The end of 2012 was marred with the tragic events that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012. While the community reeled with the shocking loss and the rest of the country attempted to deal with this heartbreak, discussions ignited on Capitol Hill, on topics from media violence to gun control. Hitting me closer to home has been the discussion sparked on the treatment and reception of mental illness in the United States.Shortly after the tragedy,…See More

A Catholic Woman Intent on Leaving a Mark

As a Roman Catholic woman in dialogue with various religious traditions, I am, at times, questioned as to my commitment: Don’t I, as a Catholic woman, feel restricted and degraded by a Church that is stuck in the past and will not recognize gender equality in the priesthood? When I then tell them that not only am I a Catholic, but that I am working towards an advanced degree in Catholic theology, the befuddlement just grows exponentially. The normal reaction is, “What can you possibly do with…See More

Accessing Mystery through Dialogue

Some of my favorite experiences in graduate school are the periodic instances in which a statement by a professor is greeted with a gasp of surprise from the class. To give a little backdrop, I am currently getting my Master’s degree at the Catholic University of America in Theology.  The program is combined with the national seminary across the street. I am normally the only woman in my class, and at times the only layperson in a room filled with young men studying for the Catholic priesthood.…See More

Catholics at the Polls

Since Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney announced his vice presidential running mate as Represetative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin on August 11, articles have been periodically appearing referencing Ryan’s Roman Catholic background, even calling this election a battle of two Catholics (referring to Vice President Joe Biden on the opposing side). There is speculation over the dilemma that will be…See More

Finding the Divine on the Road

At the ripe young age of 15, I contracted a chronic affliction: the travel bug, that continual burning desire to go somewhere new, to experience something new. Those who suffer from this affliction know that it is a constant cycle of being in the midst of an expedition or planning the subsequent trip once they return, all set in motion by that first adventure. For me, it was a school program in which a dozen of us students spent two weeks in South Korea. Since then, I have taken every…
