""Looking differently" is far more important than "looking different." We must look "outside the box" of this life, beyond our ego and individuality, to see life as it really is."

Looking Different and Differently Looking

As far as I can remember, I've always looked different. In elementary school, my classmates called me a girl, a genie, and Aladdin. In middle school, I was a raghead, a diaperhead, and Sadam Hussein. And in high school, some kids were convinced that I was Osama bin Laden. These sorts of challenges come with looking different. On the other hand, looking different has its advantages.People pay attention when I walk into a room. I'm noticeable and memorable. In fact, people don't forget meeting me.…See More

Nationalism: A Different Kind of Identity Crisis

Sometimes, I’m not totally sure who I am.Not in the crazy, lost my mind kind of way.And not in the spiritual or philosophical kind of way either. What I mean is that I don’t always know how to categorize myself. New Yorker? American? Indian? Punjabi? Texan? Sikh?In most cases, I don’t struggle with these sorts of labels.I’m well aware that general terms like this don’t come close to capturing our particularities. I also understand that, like everyone else, I’m a unique combination of “all of the…See More

Here’s Hoping People Will Look Beyond the Turban

This column is modified from a piece I wrote that appeared in the San Antonio Express-News.Last weekend, a 100-year old man finished a marathon in Toronto, Canada.Thousands gathered to celebrate his record-breaking feat, and he’s quickly become a global icon.Fauja Singh’s bright yellow turban and flowing white beard made it easy to pick him out in a crowd of 22,000 runners, and he smiled infectiously as he announced he would donate all his earnings to charity. In more ways than one, Fauja Singh…See More
