I have come to PeaceNext looking for:
networking, interreligious exploration, intrareligious reflection, friendship
I am inspired by:
I am inspired by the lives of the great souls like Lord Mahavira – the 24th Jain Tirthankara – the supreme sanctified soul, Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ, Socrates of the ancient world and by the lives of the apostles of nonviolence like Sant Francis of Assisi, Mahatma Gandhi and his mentor Srimad Rajchandra, Leo Tolstoy, Martin Luther King Jr., Ram Krishna Paramhansa, Swamy Vivekanand, Mother Teresa etc. One common thread that runs through all of them is that they all believed in ethical and righteous living and considered nonviolence or love or compassion as the basis of not only the survival of humans but of all other life forms that inhabit the planet. The philosophy of nonviolence which includes love and compassion as its corollaries is most relevant today and has in it the potential to tackle the problem of environmental and ecological degradation and that of climate change. They are all interrelated and the solution lies only in nonviolent lifestyle by all humans irrespective of the religions they follow.

The spiritually elevated souls I referred to above as my role models have demonstrated to the world the power of ahimsa or love or compassion. All of them stress that vengeance, violence enmity, hatred generated by greed, considerations of racial or ethnic supremacy, poverty, caste and colour prejudices result in more suffering, more misery for the individuals who promote the cult of violence by exciting violent passions and for humanity. They all advocate that ethical conduct is a prerequisite for a religious or social or political leader who believes in social excellence and social harmony.

I am particularly impressed by Acharya Tulsi and Acharya Mahapragya’s initiative in the form of Anuvrat Movement which emphasizes good living and interfaith harmony. All religions are sparks of truth experienced by their founders and they all stand for the purity of aims. I respect all.
My favorite spiritual places:
My favourite spiritual places include Varanasi, Haridwar, Parsvanath Hills (Siddhanchal) in Bihar, Palitana, a Jain Shrine in Gujarat, Shravan Belgola of Karnataka, Garib Nawaj Moinuddin Chisti’s Dargah of Ajmer and Assisi of Italy. These places inspire me because of the spiritual ambience that prevails there. Varanasi attracts me most since I consider it an ancient city known for its sacredness on account of the Ganges and for the temples. It is also known as Kashi, a centre of spiritual learning. Haridwar has also fascinated me and I have visited it several times. I do not know why but there is something mystical about it. I am a Jain but I love to visit this place for my retreat. Palitana Hills, said to be the hill where Lord Neminath – the 22nd Tirthankar attained Nirvana, is the most revered place for Jains and interfaith believes. When one is on top of this hill one experiences and feels the spiritual vibrations. I am also attracted towards Parsvanath Hills which is said to be the place of Nirvana for 22 Tirthankaras of the Jain tradition. Shravan Belgola, known for Bhagwan Bahubali’s majestic statue, leaves a deep impact on my mind whenever I climb the hill and view it from closeness. I cannot describe the feelings in words. The other too spiritual places that have attracted me are Sufi Saint Moinuddin Chisti’s Dargah at Ajmer and the holy city Assisi where St. Francis lived and died. When I visited it in 1990, I was not only thrilled but also felt lifted up spiritually. I believe that every religious shrine whether it is a Jain or a Christian or a Hindu or a Muslim one is charged with spiritual power and has a natural potential to change human nature from violent to nonviolent.
Interreligious causes I care about:
The interreligious causes I care about are cooperation, understanding, respect for diversity and peaceful co-existence.
Changes I am working toward in my community:
The changes I am working towards my community are broad-mindedness, interfaith dialogue, tolerance, interreligious cooperation and intereligious understanding.
About Me:
I am a retired Vice-Principal of a senior secondary school and after my voluntary retirement in 1993 I have been working as a volunteer to promote universal peace through nonviolence. Though I am a Jain I respect all faiths equally. I believe in non-absolutist attitude embedded in the Jain principle of anekant which asserts that truth is many-sided and every faith has in it a side of truth experienced by its founder. This principle enjoins its followers to respect all faiths and refrain from disputing any. Having been brought up in this philosophical outlook, I chose to become an anuvrat volunteer even when I was a student. ANUVRAT, if translated into English, means ‘small vow’. anu means small and vrata means a vow. Anuvrat Movement, a movement that seeks individual commitment to basic vows, was launched by late Jain saint Acharya Tulsi and its legacy is being continued by His Holiness Acharya Mahapragya, a Jain saint known for his crusade for ahimsa. He is of the view that nonviolence should be the basis of interfaith harmony and to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence for the children of the world, training is a must. After retirement in 1993 I am fully devoted to the dissemination of the Anuvrat spirit and promotion of ahimsa through worldwide nonviolence leadership training programme. I have organized two international nonviolence training camps and seven international conference on peace and nonviolent action. I am in the forefront of national and international nonviolence campaigns. I am a trainer in nonviolence and am going to organize the Third International Nonviolence Leadership Training Camp at our Peace Palace at Rajsamand near Udaipur from Feb. 5 to 7, 2010. Those who are interested to attend it are welcome. They can find the details from our website www.anuvibha.in or write to me slgandhi@hotmail.com

I have been involved in interfaith projects like City Partner Project launched by the Parliament of the World’s Religions and interfaith education. I have attended more than 10 major international interfaith gatherings including the three Parliaments held at Chicago (1993), Cape Town (1999) and Melbourne (2009). I have lectured on nonviolence in more than 24 countries by now and I edit a Journal called Anuvibha Reporter.
