On Leaving the Cathedral During the Homily – A Heretic’s Lent

My hands shake as I type this, less than an hour since I walked out of the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception during Father So-and-so's homily.I attend Mass once or twice a month, with the likelihood of attendance rising during the holy seasons of Lent and Advent. This morning I humped it down to the seat of the Archdiocese of Denver, a beautiful cathedral that was graced by Pope John Paul II's presence in 1993 (there's a statue of him outside). As would be expected of a 6:30 AM…See More

Fasting for Ramadan As A Catholic

I spend a few days each year fasting during Ramadan. I am not a Muslim. I am a Catholic, so fasting for me normally happens during Lent. This non-Catholic observance is not meant to offend Muslims, or Catholics. Nor am I merely "experimenting" on some spiritual journey; I'm secure in my own faith, insofar as religion is a process. I have never been "forced" into fasting, either.…See More

Contemplation, Introspection, Removal, Denial, Monk-Rock, et al.

I feel compelled to write about contemplation. I am so compelled because the room that I now occupy reminds me too much of a monk's cell to not write about contemplation.I'm at Andover Newton Theological School in advance of the first meeting of the State of Formation Executive Committee. We'll be providing editorial guidance for the journal/endeavour/forum as it moves forward. Due to East Coast snowy messes, I was forced to take a red-eye from Denver through JFK, which has resulted in perhaps…See More

Tim Brauhn’s 11 Faith-Based or Religious Predictions for 2011

CNN, under the auspices of its wonderful GILGOFF, has put together "11 Faith-Based Predictions for 2011". Here's my own swing at such a prediction-list:1. The interfaith movement, and especially the interfaith youth movement, will awesomely rock out…See More

What is dialogue?

What is dialogue? We know that it's not debate; debate implies argumentative or, before cable news, persuasive action. Dialogue is also not a simple recounting of current events with superficial commentary. Allow me to elucidate how I see the concept of dialogue. State of Formation has a number of actual scholars onboard, so I invite their corrections to the following assertion, but here we go:The Greek word(s) for dialogue: dialogos, dialegomai, dialegesthai, etc. are built on the union of two…See More
