Respecting the Faithful, Respecting Faith – Part 1: Strength in the Face of Despair
In January 1956, Martin Luther King was in despair. His decisions as a civil rights leader in Montgomery, Alabama were being questioned, even by former supporters. He had tried to resign his role as president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, feeling he was not the best man for the task. He had been receiving anonymous death threats by phone and by letter - 30 or 40 per day by late January. He feared for himself and for his young family. He was 26 years old.
On January 27th,…

Good News Flash: Jesus Hates Obama (just kidding)
Perhaps you have seen the website, http://www.jesushatesobama.com/. That’s right, the American free market, where business rules, and all is fair because, after all, business is business, has produced a website proclaiming the Good News that Jesus hates Obama™; proclaiming the Gospel that Jesus hates the President of the United States, Barack Obama. In case you didn’t know.
But, to be fair this website begins with a jocular…

By way of introduction, I share a story of my formation. In May of 2001 I began a six month trip to Central America. I wanted to learn Spanish and immerse myself in another culture. I went to learn Liberation Theology and have a chance "be in solidarity with the poor".
For this six month adventure, I refused to be a part of any exchange program. The first two weeks of this trip was…

I Accept the Other, But I Fight with My Brother: why intra-faith relations can be the biggest challenge of all
When I am invited to attend Muslim salaat (one of the five daily prayer sessions) I sit in the back with the other women. I comply with gender customs as a guest. I cover my hair under hijab without hesitation, and I do not raise my voice in song. Strangely enough, considering my personality, I do not have any problem with this.…

An Atheist and William Connolly
William E. Connolly’s Why I Am Not a Secularist (1999) has been hailed a landmark contribution to the study of secularism and modern society. In it Connolly argues for a “refashioning” of secularism into an “ethos of engagement” that is more open to religious and metaphysical views, differing comprehensive doctrines, and a plurality of partisan beliefs and sources. This kind of civic engagement means that when individuals and groups bring their perspectives into the public sphere…

Putting Islam on the Stand is Wrong and Misguided
From State of Formation
Socially and professionally, American Jews have often felt that they were being ‘put on the stand’ for their beliefs. Sometimes their beliefs even seemed to be on trial nationally – notably during the Red Scares leading up to and during the Cold War, when a disproportionate number of Jews were blacklisted.
But seldom has our religion actually been put on the stand. No organ of the federal government has, to my…

Introducing the Concept of “Peace Returned on Resources Invested” (PRORI)
This writer is considering a more comprehensive introduction to this concept; but here he offers some parts of his thinking so far, to share something of his ideas, and to see if some constructive discussion can help define the concept better, and make it more useful. The parts offered are organized into the following sections: Definitions, Propositions—and a Conclusion; An Example Transition; and Concluding Comments.

The Sacred Act of Eating: A Hindu Foodie’s Daily Ritual
From The Huffington Post
In my great grandmother’s house in Thanjavur, a small town in Tamil Nadu, every meal represented an elaborate ritual. Each night, she washed a fresh set of clothes for the next morning (always a colorful nine yards sari and its blouse) and hung them atop the highest clothing line on the balcony, to prevent anyone from inadvertently dirtying them. The following morning, she rose at 4:00 AM, while the rest of the house still…
