The Hidden Values of Medical Training

One of the most cited adages of my medical training has been William Osler’s famous quip: “the secret of caring for the patient is in caring for the patient.”

For those not in the medical field, this may seem trivial and quite obvious. I would agree. Perhaps the exalted status of this adage says less about its elegance and more about desperation to grab onto any poetic description of caring and compassion. The value of compassion is not one formally taught in most medical schools.…

2nd day Festival of Sokar

Greetings to all on this the 2nd day of the festival of Sokar

As compassion grows stronger, so does your commitment to the welfare of all beings, even if you have to act alone.

From these words we can learn that there are times when we have to act as in individual and not to be one of the crowd. For there are times that the action of just one person can lead to greater help for the greater than the combined ations of a mass group.

We can…

What I’ve Learned From The Spiritual Masters

By Steve McSwain

from Huffington Post

Thomas Merton, Roman Catholic Trappist monk (1915-68) was one of the greatest proponents of “inter-spirituality” in modern history. He believed that the pursuit of a mystical life was the key to meaning, as well as unity, between people.

He was right then. He’s still right today.

I’m a Christian by…

Human rights are compass-less values: an Islamic Human Rights discourse

In recent years, the criticism on human rights and Islam has increased. This includes two extreme views which surprisingly both have the same claim, namely that Islam and human rights are incompatible. One group working from an 'Western secular vision ‘ which sees Islam as a religion with fossilized medieval laws incompatible with contemporary "Western human rights'. The other group consists of Muslims from an orthodox-dogmatic perspective who 'argues that the phenomenon of' human rights' is…

Comment on world religion and global peace

I read recently about 5 blind brothers that were washing an elephant.

The first Brother proclaimed the experience was like a washing a large flat

wall the second disagreed and said, it was like 4 palm tree trunks,

the third, thinking the first two were fools said, it was just like two long

bones

the fourth said, that's absurd, it was like two big banana leaves

the fifth and shortest said it was like a rope hanging from the…

In this case, a dishwasher named Bernardino had been shorted over $10,000 dollars in wages by a Nashville restaurant owner.  After nearly a year of phone calls and letter writing campaigns, Bernardino had received multiple promises of financial compensation but…
