Allah Muslim-Christian Controversy in Malaysia ...

Dear PeaceNext Friends,
It is indeed disheartening to see the Malaysian Muslims resorting to violence against Christian brothers over the name of God. I am posting here the Comments of Prof Juan Cole because I concur with him. As I have argued in my book, 'A Sufi's Ruminations on One World Under God,' we need to liberate God from the bondage of religions instead of fighting over usage of names of God.
With Love & Best Wishes, always ...

Allah Muslim-Christian Controversy in Malaysia

The riots by some Muslims in Malaysia and attacks on Christian churches over a recent court ruling allowing Christians to call God "Allah" are as baffling and dismaying to me as to everyone else. I mean, there is a post-colonial dimension to these things. Malaysia was conquered by the British in the 19th century and ruled with an iron fist, and the British brought in a lot of Chinese laborers for the tin mines. When British Malaya got its independence as Malaysia and Singapore, Muslims were only a little over half of the population in Malaysia and many felt that they had been discriminated against in their own country by Christian British colonial policy. That the Chinese emerged as an economic elite did not help. It has nevertheless been a relatively successful multicultural society, mainly Muslim and Buddhist. Christians are 6% or so.

Whatever is driving these disturbances, the Malays are just wrong that the word "Allah" is especially Islamic. It is just a Semitic word for the divine, formed from the definite article al- and the root ilah which means 'god'. It is cognate to the Hebrew Elohim, one of the words for God in the Hebrew Bible (ilah= eloh). The gods of the Meccan pagans were called ilah before Islam. Al-Ilah, or The God, became elided into Allah and was used by pagans to refer to a great distant creator-god, less accessible than the star-goddesses they worshipped. There were Christian Arab kingdoms before Islam, whose inhabitants referred to the God of the Gospels and the Old Testament as Allah.

The Qur'an itself insists that it is a restatement of the truths revealed by the one God, Allah, to previous prophets such as Moses and Jesus.

Arab Christians call God Allah every day.

So the word has no specially Islamic overtones and was not invented by or monopolized by Muslims. This linguistic history is one reason I think English-speaking Muslims who insist on saying Allah rather than just God are wrong. They are implying that the God of the Qur'an is not the God of Jesus, Moses and Abraham, whereas it insists that he is.

This Indonesian blog a href="http://indosnesos.blogspot.com/2010/01/malaysia-churches-hit-over-allah-row.html">http://indosnesos.blogspot.com/2010/01/malaysia-churches-hit-over-allah-row.html> seems as confused as I am.

i agree with you my brother...it is a human trait to have to identify with a name ...and the name is not the source but a name..... all of this squabble just takes us away from That Which Is... if LOVE was the focus and not these words for God then we would see the change and know that which is REAL

Why bothers with names? Allah/Jehovah/God/Tuhan (Indonesian for "GOD")/Existence..so what? Jesus, Muhammad, Sidharta, Krishna, Zarathustra--do please "come back" to re-explain your teachings since many of yours are misinterpreted and human race have long been misled by those ulemas, mullahs, priests. Many heads and throats have been chopped because of religion(s). My fellow humans in Malaysia are fighting over names.Let's take up arms to fight against ignorance and unawareness, and LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE..yes IT is our only arm for this purpose.

Religion is meant to spritualise and enlighten one and all. Alas, it now turns to rubbish--producing bad very bad nose-choked odor. We're simply embracing a religion, knowing what it means for. We think it's a goal, we don't know or, rather, ignore the true meaning of it as a tool to achieve spiritual enlightenment. Religion is being used by those who are craving for power and wealth. So, wake up..redefine a religion, any of it,--can we???? One Earth One Sky One Humankind.

we need to liberate God from the bondage of religions...IS THAT THE REASON WHY 3 PROPHETS DIDNT START RELIGIONS IN THEIR LIFE TIME..? IF RELIGION ARE ARE SO IMPORTANT THEY WOULD HAVE STARTED THEM THEN, WHEN THEY HAVE SO MANY CAPABLE FOLLOWERS WITH THEM? TIME TO REALIZE AND FIGURE IT OUT..GPDC BELEIVED THAT THERE WILL BE A TIME HUMANS WILL ALL SURRENDER UNDER OUR CREATOR, GUIDED BY HIM, WITHOUT ANY RELIGION, WITHOUT ANY SPIRITUAL LEADER, AFTER ALL MOST RELIGION TEACHING ARE GUIDED US TO HIM AND TO BE A GOOD HUMAN BEING..SIMPLE..IF ONE CAN'T DO THAT WHAT MORE CAN THEY SAY..LISTEN TO OUR CONSCIENCE, LISTEN TO GOD..WHICH EVER NAME YOU CALL HIM IS LEAST IMPORTANT..JUDGEMENT HAS STARTED THE WORLD HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO CHANGE AND COME TO ONE....PREACHING HAVE NO MORE EFFECT..THANK OUR CREATOR..PEACE AND LOVE
