I have just returned to my office after participating in an Interfaith Prayer meeting at Parliament House, Sydney. The gathering was held in memorial for mahatma Gandhi and dedicated to the victims of the Haiti earthquake.
It opened with peace songs on sitar and tablaa by a Christian and Hindu duet and concluded with a wonderful instrumental presentation on the hang and mridungam percussion instruments. Between the moving musical pieces were speeches by members of parliament, civil servants and the Consul-General of India, on the themes of interfaith harmony and the need to oppose racism. Then prayers were recited from a Hindu, a Roman Catholic, a Jew (me), a Buddhist and a Muslim.
The atmosphere was wonderful - the common message of Hope wound its way throughout the day.
May our blessings for peace and compassion be heard on High!
Shalom
Jeremy
