New Meaning of Dharma, Artha, Kaama, Moksha

Dharmaa, Atrha, Kaama, Moksha. We’ve heard about these wisdom from Hindu’s tradition. But do we make correct meaning of those wisdom ? Commonly, we meaning it with materialism things. As an example, when we talked about moksha. We usually imagine that we are gone, disappear. Is that the true meaning of moksha ? Well, I found beautiful meaning of these four wisdom from one contemporary’s book. These wisdom is our lost treasure and not only belonging to the hindu’s people but for all of us to get clarity mind. And its my pleasure to share it to you what I'v read from this book, (taken from The Hanuman Factor’s book, written by Anand Krishna, p.26-27)

1. Dharma (righteousness). This is the ability to discern between what is right and what is not right, at any given time. What is not right may not necessarily be what is bad. What is not right today could be right tomorrow. What is not right today could be right there. Dharma is a dynamic, not a stale concept.
2. Artha (meaningful life). Wealth alone does not make our life meaningful. It is true happiness that makes our life meaningful. And, happiness comes from a healthy body and healthy mind. It comes from good relationship, and the sense of satisfaction.
3. Kaama (fulfillment). When our worldly desires are fulfilled, we are happy. When ur sensory cravings are appeased, we feel fulfilled. Such happiness, however, is not long lasting. Such fulfillment is a mirage. For, they depend upon outside factors variables, upon which we have no control whatsoever. True fulfillment comes from the realization of all our potentials. And our highest potential is to evolve from being passionate to being compassionate. It is from being instinctive to being intuitive.
4. Moksa (freedom). And the greatest freedom is FREEDOM FROM FEAR. Fear makes us live mediocre life. Those who are full of fear. Fear makes us life. Those who are full of fear are unable to live fully. To such people, belief in a fear-free afterlife is the only consolation. They live in a constant fear here, hoping for a better life there. Theirs is truly a miserably state.

From those four attainments, I got very clear definition, but not only definition, above explanation guide me to clear my mind. Its some kind of pragmatism guidance to our life. What should to do and what should we avoid for. If we live at the boundless of delution, then we will realized the beauty of life. And if this is happening to our life, we get freedom from fear. But only Guru can help us to free ourself with the boundary of fear and delutional life.

My friend Anand Krishna is right in describing dharma as righteousness. It is our discernment of right and wrong. My quote came from the chapter "Duel of the Dual" contrasting an inner sense of universal right vs. our outer sense relative to society. Often they agree, but sometimes they may duel. As my friend shree swamiji says, the inner heart is real, with no limitation and beyond any words.

A short quote from my book at www.suprarational.org

Divine law, or dharma in Sanskrit - logos in Greek - is fundamental within
both Hinduism and Buddhism. It has many definitions and applications.*
“Hinduism” was first used by British scholars for the religions of the people of the
Indus valley. Many people in India refer to their faith as sanatana dharma, the
absolute and eternal law. Siddharta Gautama, called the Buddha for Awakened or
Enlightened Being, founded “Buddhism,” correctly named Buddha-dharma,
Buddha’s teaching of the eternal Truth, or Buddha-sasana, practice of those teach-
ings. Universal law supersedes all worldly laws.

*Dharma, or logos, can also mean the source of world order, cosmic reason, moral teachings,
individual duty, etc. Unlike dharma, logos more commonly refers to human reason, e.g. logic.
In Christianity, Logos is God’s Word (wisdom) incarnate in Jesus.
