Recently, cyberspace has seen some lively discussions on the pew survey on religious knowledge and also on openness to intellectual curiosity in religions.
This has me asking some questions.
Looking at the "out there" or more objective details what do we know about the religions that we ourselves profess to belong to? That is, what does a reality check on our own religious knowledge look like? What do we know about other religions that differ from our own religion?
Looking at the "in there" or more subjective convictions and fondness that we have what do we know about our own experience of our faith? How committed are we to our own congregations? What does our love and discomfort with other look like and feel like? Are we followers out of love or duty? Are we still living our parents' faith or have we made it our own? Is our religious experience burdened by anger, shame or guilt?
How open are we really to religious traditions that differ from our own?
If our life is the only book some one reads on our faith what are they actually seeing?
And, more positively, who has been a challenging or encouraging influence in your life of faith? Can you continue to enjoy that and be grateful for them? What events have offered challenge and encouragement to you? (I would have to answer PWR2009 here, amongst other things! ;) ).
I found myself asking these questions but I am sure there are many more....
Peace.
