Comment by Maynard on June 14, 2012 at 12:14pm While the question itself is not a good one because it requires a definition of "God", it does lead to the question of "What should I belive in? and why?"
Simply put, we believe in that which we know to be true, and for the reason simply that it is true.
Perhaps the post intended to inquire "Why should we revere that which sustains us?" Even then it seems obvious that if we don't [have reverence], then it won't [sustain us].
In the physical world, our bodies are sustained by water, air, and foods. Each of these are sustained by the entire ecosystem in its complex harmony and diversification. Our bodies are the sustaining system for that which lives within us, our emotions, intellectual stimulation, inspirations and aspirations, and more, all of which are highly dependent upon, more precisely interdependent with, other humans.
From cellular biology to the vastness of the cosmos to the neurological processes of the brain, we see cause and effect, not serially but interwoven network of energy (and some matter), all responsive. But only in humans do we see choice, and specifically choice in the presence of conscience. Both choice and conscience are dependent upon the breadth and depth of our consciousness.
As the original post concludes, our particular and specific human contribution to this wondrous universe is to actively express love and gratitude.
